The Notre-Dame Quarter
The development in this quarter was initially due to the importance that fairs and markets had in oloron, from the Middle Ages. The Viscount of Béarn’s high town was too cramped and did not provide the best conditions for trading. So the customers gathered at the foot of the hill on the right-hand bank of the "gave d’Ossau". Arts and crafts, in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, then industry in the following centuries, made this quarter, known as "Marcadet", one of the most dynamic of the city.
